I advised companies on employment matters and appeared for them at Employment Tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal throughout the UK; I also prepared documentation for them, such as contracts of employment, as well as grievance and disciplinary codes.
I conducted litigation in Scotland, where I appeared at the Sheriff Courts [the territorial court] throughout the country, as well as arbitrations; I also dealt with cases at the Court of Session [the country’s principal court].
My practice included personal injury work [for employers and their insurers], road traffic accident cases for UK and overseas insurers, as well as commercial disputes. I also acted in cases where there were health and safety prosecutions and inquiries into deaths. I also advised on Admiralty matters.
I had a substantial involvement in interviewing witnesses, drafting court documentation and instructing experts ― both medical and technical ― as well as appointing and supervising the work of counsel in appropriate cases.
As a regular part of my practice, I was directly involved in negotiations for settling claims or in an attempt to avoid litigation.
