Brian joined CBS [Costa Blanca Samaritans] at a time when it had just started to go through the tortuous and protracted process of becoming registered as a not-for-profit organisation in Spain. He was able to guide us along this path with great skill, and his knowledge in this area of work was invaluable, particularly when it came to the many legal issues involved.
He took responsibility for the effective and efficient administration of CBS and its resources, all the time striving for best practice and good governance. He wrote the majority of the policies that CBS now has in existence and was primarily responsible for ensuring that all the necessary and correct procedures were properly put into place. None of this fazed him: he was able to do everything that was asked of him, and a lot more, in a calm and efficient way.
I expect we would have 'got there in the end' - though certainly not as efficiently or as quickly - but it was an extremely difficult process to go through, and I know that Brian’s input was a key factor in enabling us to successfully achieve the establishment of CBS as a legal entity in Spain.
For the following two years he kept us on track at all times, ensuring that all our activities were conducted in keeping with CBS policies and in accordance with the laws of Spain. He made sure that all of our Executive meetings were well prepared and conducted in accordance with our Standing Orders, and ensured that all his communications with other members of CBS were appropriate and timely.
In carrying out the role of Treasurer he constantly produced a very high quality of work and was capable of doing this without supervision, as he was utterly reliable and trustworthy. He always maintained a friendly, yet professional relationship with all other members of the organisation.
When Brian moved back to the UK he was no longer available to us on a day-to-day basis, but he continued to offer the organisation support and consultation by email when we needed it, and for this we were most grateful. His leaving left a gaping hole. Brian was always there when he was required; he gave up a tremendous amount of his free time to CBS and never let the organisation down.
Finally, Brian is extremely insightful and is able to judge what is going on around him in a way that I suspect reflects his years of legal training and experience. He is as sharp as a needle and often sees through to the nub of a problem when others are slower to recognise it.
